A crime is a wrong doing classified by the state or congress as a felony or misdemeanor. It is an offense against a public law. Crimes are defined and punished by statutes and by the common law, most common law offences are as well known and as precisely ascertained as those which are defined by statutes. All immoral acts which tend to create prejudice in the community are punishable by the courts of justice. Individual human societies may define each crime and crimes differently, such as in the different localities at different time stages of the so called crime from planning, disclosure, supposedly intended, supposedly prepared, incomplete, and complete or future proclaimed after the crime. Criminal Records is an official documentation of the criminal history of an individual, and generally used for job applications, visa, school and many more. Because of the vital information written in the record, it is widely used as a reference in knowing a person.

Background check is a method use to compile records such as criminal record, financial records and commercial records of a person. Background check is mostly requested by employers on job candidates for employment screening. Information given in a criminal record differs in every country and its jurisdictions. There are different types of criminal offenses. Parole Violations are criminals that are serving a jail sentence that has a conditional release from prison. Common parole violations include failing a drug test, possession of drugs, alcohol or weapons.

Committing a sex offender status is ranked in different levels depending on the decision of the court based on the gravity of the offense. A person that is convicted of certain sexual crimes is registered as a sex offender for life. The probation violation is assigned as an alternative to a jail term. This type of violation will result into several consequences including a revocation of probation, an extension on the length of probation and community service or mandatory substance abuse treatment. The traffic violations that contained serious traffic offenses will also appear in a criminal record. These serious violations include accidents that resulted in fatalities and injuries.

Misdemeanor is usually considered a less serious or minor offense, it is punishable by less than two and a half years in prison and some of them are punished with monetary fines. Other jurisdictions classify it as an offense carrying a sentence of two or five years. Felony is considered serious committed criminal offense such as rape, arson, burglary, murder, kidnapping, assault and grand theft. Typically, felony carries a penalty of incarceration from one year to life in prison, to death penalty in prison. Certain offense may also straddle the line of a crime that may be considered either a felony or a misdemeanor that will depend on the situation.

Criminal laws define crimes and may establish punishments and a criminal procedure describes the process through which the criminal laws are enforced. Criminal law is only distinguished for serious violations with potential consequences or sanctions such as failure to abide in its rules. There are five objectives that are enforced by the criminal law. The retribution in the criminal justice system refers to the idea that offenders should be punished for committing crimes when they freely violate existing social rules. Deterrence executes a penalty on people who commit offenses.
