The inherited imperfections of all mankind bring us into the throws of greed. There are many different structures of greed such as American greed, quotes about greed, infectious greed, greed and fear, greed versus love and the price of greed. With all these various explanations, the question arises, what is greed? The World English Dictionary defined that "greed is excessive consumption of or desire for food; gluttony; excessive desire, as for wealth or power." Francine Morrissette in her article, The Third Deadly Sin-Greed expressed, "He who dies with the most stuff wins." She then went on to explain that greed, "is the battle cry of the greedy. In today's consumer society, this deadly sin is one that affects almost everyone." The definition and truth of Francine's words permeate our lives each day. Yet what is the reality of this infectious trait?

Greed has caused more damage to the relationships of #families and friends. Families are losing their homes which they have lived in for years. It is not unusual today to see empty homes with "bank owned" signs posted in the windows. Neighborhoods previously experienced a foreclosure crisis never seen before, as families were thrown into the streets. A display of greed became the focus, where inordinate things were more valuable than people. The #economic depression caused parents to lose their jobs, therefore unable to pay their mortgages. Young children along with their parents were homeless. This source of greed truly demonstrates that our society, "cherishes things more than people or relationships."

Greed Can Destroy Family and Friend Relationships

The price of greed has also destroyed families and friendships. People utilize #scams against their family and friends sometimes without knowledge or intention. For example, there are numerous scams today developed for the sole purpose of greed. Whether the scam involves debt relief, home modification, credit score or travel scams, it is detrimental to its victims. A family member, neighbor or friend may get introduced to the swindler, thinking that the scam is an opportunity to make fast money. The pyramid scam is then introduced where individuals are invited to become supposedly a part of a money-making deal. You then bring your family and friends in as you explain what, "a wonderful, make money while you sleep," plan this is. Your friends then become involved and decide to invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars. In the end, the only person making money is the greedy swindler who started the #pyramid scam. The relationship is now effected or completely damaged forever. For centuries, this has been the price and face of greed.

Greedy Debt Relief Scams

A major scam that is the ultimate source of greed and is played upon millions; is the debt relief scam. Many people struggle with the burdens of credit card debt. While individuals are ensnared within the prison of these debts, along comes a disreputable company claiming they will help you pay off your debts through #debt solution program. They have you deposit hundreds of dollars, as they gather all the information about your credit cards that you are behind on. Every month they charge you a payment of almost two hundred dollars, as they so call negotiate with your credit card company. A lawyer who was very familiar with the industry of credit solution companies admitted, "a lot of these companies are owned by the credit card companies." At the end of the year, the credit card company will file your nonpayment with the government and receive payment from your taxpayer dollars. After receiving payment, this debt solution company which is possibly owned by the credit card company will now come after you and pretend they are going to make this great deal for you. You are advised that only half of your balance owed is needed, although the credit card company has already received payment.

Another thing some debt relief companies do is take the information you gave concerning the highest amount you may owe on a credit card. A shrewd representative may inform the credit card company of your intentions to include this large amount in their program. The credit card company will then go out and file a judgment against you through the courts, in order to receive their money in larger amounts, at a quicker pace. They can even put holds on your personal bank account to fulfill, the payment of that judgment. You have not only paid the credit card company through your taxpayer dollars but you have also been swindled by the debt relief company which is possibly owned and operated by your credit card company. There might be some reputable debt relief programs out there, so pray and do your research. Unfortunately, there are more scams going on in this industry than ever. What a world of reckless greed which affects our lives daily.

Tax Identity Fraud is Pure Greed

Today the world is focused on greed, wealth and power. Stolen #tax identity fraud, is one of the latest scams. #IRS has been outsmarted by these dangerous greed seekers. A recent news documentary acknowledged that taxpayers are losing billions to this latest type of fraud. Greedy individuals use the social security numbers of innocent victims, who are taxpayers. It was also revealed that this information is stolen from your dentist offices, hospitals or doctor's offices. One scammer acknowledged, "Everybody was with the scam. It was like a nation of people doing this." One man that was interviewed during this documentary admitted that they have parties at hotels where they get together to commit this fraud. After these fraudulent forms are filed, the IRS, deposit the money on prepaid visa cards which is impossible to trace. "IRS, cannot tell if it is the real person or not that is filing the tax return." This agency has acknowledged that they have a lot of work to do. One suggestion was given that IRS should, "Delay payments until they are matched with W-2 forms of employers." This type of greed and fraud must cease immediately. Imagine that after you have worked hard for a year, then when you go to file your taxes at the end of the year; some scammer has already filed your taxes without your knowledge. You are devastated because your family desperately needed that additional income. Once again, greed is the focus. Love for fellow humankind is nonexistent.

Home Modification Scams are Detrimental

Home modification scams are more abundant than ever. Families struggle to make their mortgage payments after losing their jobs. Scams are created to contact these people and charge them a thousand dollars or more. The scam artist claim they will contact your mortgage company and modify your mortgage. In the meantime, nothing is happening and they have collected all this money which could have been used to pay your mortgage. Remember also, that the home modification scam company will advise you not to pay your mortgage. Although your mortgage continues to add up. Three months may pass and not only have you not heard from the loan modification scam company but now you receive a foreclosure notice. Before you know it there is so much interest and penalties, that you cannot afford to pay the late payments and your home can be lost in foreclosure. The loan modification scam company is nowhere to be found. You have just been scammed. This is another effect of greed that continues to sweep the country.

Greed Within Politics, Celebrities, and Individuals

#Greed is prevalent in the political realm. Previously, on the television program #CBS This Morning, a poll was revealed that "82% of the politicians are promoted by greed. More than, 50% of people in America, believe that greedy people are more successful. Celebrities were considered to be 59% greedier than the average American person. A person who is selfless, received 46% of the vote, to be more successful in life. When a younger woman is seen with an older man, she is considered to be 53% greedier and not necessarily in love with this older man."

Greed is an unscrupulous desire for wealth and power. It does not have a heart or concern for the damage it causes. Greed is infectious and contaminates the world. It alienates the individual from family, friends, and God. It is a selfish act that benefits only the greedy individual temporarily. Remember, "whatever we sow, we shall reap." Why not focus your life on positive seeds that will reap love. Material things which are usually the focus of the greedy person will come and go. A good reputation with humans and God can give you pleasure and allow you to sleep at night. Meditate on these words and live a happy, good life without the negative effects of greed. Learn to be selfless and not selfish. The opposite of #love is selfishness. We should try to imitate #Jesus Christ, who imitates our Heavenly Father Jehovah because "God is love."

Hi Sandra,

There are so many reasons that greed exist but the major reason is selfishness. It started with Satan the devil in the garden of Eden, where he desired God's rightful authority to rule over his creation which was mankind. Today, people continue to demonstrate this selfish spirit of desiring something that does not belong to them but they greedily take it anyway.

Consider the rapid increase of identity theft. After individuals have worked hard to establish their credit history, someone comes along and steals it due to greed and selfishness. The victim of identity theft suffers for years to come, just because of one individual thinking more of himself than others.

The only way we can stop it is to teach as many people as we can the loving ways of our Heavenly Father Jehovah and his son Jesus Christ. Matthew 22:37-40 explained by Jesus, that if we love God first and then love our neighbor as you would love yourself, not one person would commit greed or any selfish act toward themselves or others. This is the world I look forward to when God's kingdom will fill the earth with people who would never bring harm to their neighbor or themselves but demonstrate pure love on a daily basis. Millions of individuals are desperately trying to live as close to these principles as possible although we are all still imperfect. For more information go to website listed below.

Please do not consider vengeance or retaliation because those committing these greedy, selfish acts will be dealt with by the true God. They will definitely not get away with taking advantage of the innocent because they are greedy and selfish. Just leave it in Jehovah God's hands as you go to him in prayer. Take care and I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Johnc630. I wish I knew what web host is on this article. I have been trying to find out since I wrote the article years ago. I thought it might have been because of the publication "The Third Deadly Sin," mentioned but I have used it in other articles and the web host was not as effective. If I ever find out I will definitely let you know.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Otis,

Thanks for the explanation of the origin of greed through money initiatives. Whether it was generated 100 years ago or yesterday, innocent people suffer through manipulation.

Concerning greed in real estate recently, I spoke with a dear friend who is a Realtor. She cannot make an income anymore because banks have foreclosed on so many people along with short sales that her telephone no longer rings with people in search of purchasing a home. She explained how the banks own these homes and they gradually release them for sale again. Families once lived in these home but loss them due to lack of employment. Imagine, if banking officials thought like Jesus and allowed families to find jobs again before they foreclosed on them. This would be a demonstration of love for our brother. I know this is unrealistic because greed causes people to want interest upon interest so they can make more money that they do not need which results in greed.

Today's greed is destroying our culture. Movies, video games, Music are all being watered down for the masses. They follow a simple recipe designed to make money, there is nt art, no flair in any of them. One can hardly be comparing someone like John Denver or Bruce Springsteen to the generic pop today, they were artists, not just fashion models dolled up by studio exec's to fleece your money. Same goes with movies, there are no classics like Casablanca or 1997's Titanic.

This is where you see greed at its worst.

Unfortunately your example of people losing their home are not that valid. I believe you should do your research, I will not claim that greed is not a factor here, however.

What it comes down is that there was a law introduced somewhere in 1910s, around 100 years ago. This law allows banks to loan out 10 times more money than they have. But this is just the beginning.

Let's say the bank has $10 in its vault, it can loan it out $100 as a result of this law. Now this is where it gets interesting, when that $100 is placed into another bank, and eventually it will (unless you stuff it in your mattress), https://issuu.com/dichvuthetindung another law comes into effect. Since this money is not hard currency, but only a check, they can now loan out 9/10 of that money again under a new loan due to a different law. So there is another $90 loan, then it reiterates down to nothing. For the sake of math lets say $80, $70, $60, $50, $40, $30, $20, $10, $1. After this the amount is so low they cannot issue another loan under that law (since I won't get into pennies). The math is off but it will do for my example.

However, the main problem comes in when the bank wants that money back. Well let's say they want %10 interest and start doing the math. The amount of the loans they issued add up to $551, so that is $55 interest. Well let's see, we pay back that $551 dollars, now we need to find $55 dollars.

Now in my example the treasury printed out $10, lets say we acquired it and now we owe $45. Where can we get that?

We cannot just dip into our paycheck. This happens at the federal level, the business you work for got its money somehow. Either A: From the treasury directly, or B: from the bank via one of those loans. Unless your business is counterfeiting then your paycheck must have come from one of those sources at one time or another, since there is no other way money is made other than the treasury.

Basically the treasury only printed $10, they loaned out $551 dollars as a result and want $55 dollars in interest. You can never pay off that interest because all money comes from the treasury and they only printed off $10.

Now this happens basically for every ten dollar bill they have, and since the money that is printed goes straight to the bank we can assume it goes for every ten dollar bill printed as well.

As result of these laws and all the debts over the last 100 years made with those laws, that $45 turned into hundreds of trillions.

It is now a children's game of hot potato, someone is going to get caught with that debt and lose their house. This is what is happening today. It is a result of an insane law passed 100 years ago which has worked its way into the backbone of our economy and destroying the whole system.

And this is just the beginning.

So to sum it up, if you added all the money in the world, from the 25 cents you put in a candy machine to the billions of dollars of Bill Gates and used it to pay off every loan in the world, you would come up with less than %50 of the required amount.

When the system creates this level of imbalance, there is little the average Joe can do but try to pass the potato before the music stops.

I simplified what happens a little, but that is gist of it.

Also interesting is one fact. If you took a close look at my example, the treasury is not the only place that creates money. The bank also issues new money under the guise of loans.

The treasury printed $10 and the bank loaned out $551 as result. We know it got that $10 from the treasury, so where did they get the remaining $541 to loan out? If you say they were just pretending they had it, and the law lets them get away with that, you win.

Hi Nihkilesh,

Interesting comment about greed. It is an infection for mankind and things such as sacrifice and love would be cures for the problem of greed. Keep up the intriguing thoughts.

Hi HSchneider,

Thanks for the comment. We are truly living in a very sick world today. Greed is part of our daily lives. We have to pray and try to be careful that we will not be taken advantage of because these really are critical times that we are living in. Thanks again for your opinion.

Excellent Hub, Angelladywriter. Many financial services firms are quite greedy and will use any means to extract more profits from their fellow and less well off Americans. They never consider the consequences. Money and profits are the end all for them.

Hi robie 2,

Thanks for your comment concerning greed being a deadly sin and human failing. It really hurts when we see others intentionally steal, lie and mistreat people all for the sake of a dollar. May we all be prayerful that one day soon this will change based on the hope given to us through God's word the Bible.

Greed is definitely one of the seven deadlies and a human failing that few manage to escape-- and it has been the downfall of many-- good reminder here.
