We all where in a situation where we wanted to enjoy our time with friends, family or your loved one. Then somewhere near you you hear something strange. It gets louder and louder. You know you heard it somewhere before a thousand times. Then it hit you. "HERE I AM..... POKERFACE....". Some may like these ringtones, but I do not. The mood is falling rapidly. Finally it stops. The person finally found his mobile phone and stopped the ringtone that you could hear a mile away. You think it's over but you are wrong. Now the real pain is beginning. You may have heard of a mobile phone jammer. A device that that is used to block all mobile phone signals within a certain range. They come in all sizes and are widely used in areas where a mobile phone is prohibited like at high profile business meetings. They come stationary or portable and differ in the range they can block the signals. There are jammer for other frequencies as well, like WLAN or GPS. Even jammers that can block all of them. Nowadays they are small enough to carry them where ever you go and powerful enough to block signals up to 30 meters with the portable version. The Range of the stationary ones are way higher. So I ordered a portable one to test them out after finding a wide range of mobile phone jammers at a shop in china.
There was an interesting report put out by the GAO in August of 2013 titled; "Next Generation Jammer - DOD Should Continue to Assess Potential Duplication and Overlap As Program Moves Forward," which discussed how important such systems were to the military, but also how much overlap there was in that regard, especially with regards to airborne electronic warfare systems, and thus, the report's summary noted the following:
Many of the latest weapon systems use GPS to accurately guide the missiles, rounds, projectiles, aircraft, and bombs - this is good because it prevents collateral damage of those who are not fighting, want nothing to do with any wars, conflict, or political impasse. They are just innocent or semi-innocent civilians, and neither side has a beef with them. Of course, if your enemy is using GPS to put a weapon on top of your head, you'd hope they miss, so it makes sense to jam their GPS to ensure they do, or hope they do anyway. Let's talk.
"Redundancy in some of these areas may, in fact, be desirable. However, pursuing multiple acquisition efforts to develop similar capabilities can result in the same capability gap being filled twice or more, lead to inefficient use of resources, and contribute to other warfighting needs going unfilled. It is very uncomfortable to know you are being watched by the authorities when you have not committed a crime. The bad thing here is that you can't do anything to change it except to buy a jammer. The government wants to keep everything under control and no-one can tell you what will be the next human right that is going to be eliminated in order to ensure the government's big power.
